As we all just found out, Zaption was just acquired by education focused Workday to be implemented into their new learning management system and will be shutting its doors.

From their site, you can see that the company has provided their paid users with time extensions to download their content at no extra charge. Very cool.

However, downloading mass amounts of video means having a place to store them (it’s a problem I deal with all the time). And that’s really not a solution for people who still desire interactive video.

Looking into it myself, most Zaption alternatives are horrendously expensive and slow.Take SnapApp for instance which is $2,400 a month. Or Adventr, which is $60/month for professional use. I’ve looked into using all of them.
Which is part of the reason myself and a few Teachable team members created Vizia.

Like Zaption, Vizia offers video quizzes, short answer, and polling integrations. What Vizia does on top of that is lead capturing, easy embedding anywhere, easy insertable calls-to-action, and a soon to be Wistia integration. All while remaining light and powerful.
It’s also totally free.
A few weeks ago Teachable (we help people create & sell online courses) had a hack week to get team members working across departments & a byproduct of that hack week was Vizia.co. It’s intended to help both our instructors, our product and our marketing team.
And it was fun to build :-)
Because it’s not our main company or our source of income, we can do it for free which is why I wanted to drop it here for everyone looking for a less expensive alternative.
Check it out: Vizia.co

Holoclip

WHAT IT DOES

Long YouTube videos such as class lectures or music mega-mixes can be difficult to consume. For instance a student may not want to watch a full 45 minute lecture but want to watch 5 minute portions. HoloKlip lets anyone virtually clip YouTube videos and allow anyone to use them, our API also lets developers build Apps that can use the clippings in different ways. Think of it as allowing you to consume a long video the way you would read a book, page by page.

EMBED YOUR CLIPPINGS

We also provide an embed app that lets you embed clipped videos into other sites. The example on the right shows what embedded clippings look like.
Below you can also see embeds on a blog with commenting enabled
Introduction to Computer Science and Programming

CONSUME MUSIC MEGA-MIXES

See how HoloKlip takes the hassle out of consuming YouTube mega-mixes. By clipping a long mix you can easily use it while working out without having to awkwardly fiddle with the default slider control. Happy gymming!

Vialogues

Vialogues = Video + Dialogue -> allowing online group discussion. It allows you to interact with videos to make them more meaningful to students and promote discussion. Upload videos, get them from youtube etc...once it is on there you can enhance student engagement through conversation by adding questions and polls.

EDpuzzel

EDPuzzle is a very basic form of zaption, it allows you to use only what you need from a range of different videos on their website. You can insert audio notes and video recordings as well as add questions in at any point.

Youtube and eTV are now integrated with Zaption. WeVideo is also a great video editing tool that you can use in the classroom.

Turn online videos into interactive learning experiences that engage students, deepen understanding and track progress.

Teachers use Zaption’s intuitive web app to quickly add images, text, quizzes, and discussions to existing videos from eTV, YouTube, Vimeo and private video libraries. The result is an interactive learning tour that transforms video from a “lean back” experience to an engaging “lean forward” activity. With Zaption’s analytics, instructors can get immediate feedback on how students interact with the content and understand key concepts.

For giving teachers the power to use video as an educational tool. Teachers are turning increasingly to YouTube to supplement textbook lessons for students. The problem? Just watching a video doesn’t guarantee students retain any of its information. That’s where Zaption comes in. Its web app enables anyone to take online video and add interactive elements, like review questions, paving the way for deep learning.
